The rollercoaster hasn’t stopped yet 😉 I’m handling the sales myself for this version too—not through that big smiling arrow or that hefty blue gentleman.
And believe me, it takes some doing! With the Dutch version, I spent many weekends packing orders until I found a wonderful partner, Scalabor, to handle shipping. But for the English version, it’s back to reinventing the wheel.
For readers within the EU, I can use the same shipping process as for my Dutch book, as these are also printed in the Netherlands. But for the English market (read: the UK, no longer in the EU), it’s more challenging. Fortunately, I’ve found a UK-based printer who will both print and ship the book for me. In 1–2 weeks, this setup should be up and running (pre-orders for the UK are open!). I’m genuinely excited to see if this goes as smoothly as it did in the Netherlands.
I know, I know. So why bypass the major platforms? Here’s why: what many don’t realize is that these big companies we’re used to ordering from (yes, me too) take a massive slice of the profit, often leaving the writer with mere crumbs. After pouring years into creating a book, that feels way out of balance. If something doesn’t feel right, I believe you shouldn’t do it.
And yes, this choice comes with its own challenges. It means handling everything—from obtaining an English VAT number to managing printing, shipping, and responding to emails from readers who might miss a package or grow a bit impatient 😉 It’s definitely not the easiest route.
Still, it’s doable! Especially when you self-publish, it’s not so strange to take an alternative path. My book is, after all, about ‘moving beyond thinking’ and stepping away from beliefs like “there’s no other way; I must be on that big online store.” Letting go of those ideas opens up room for possibilities you might never have considered!
For my Dutch book, I never once regretted it and learned so much along the way. I’m very curious to see how this journey unfolds with the English version. I know it will bring its own surprises, so I’m also reminding myself not to stick to how it went with the Dutch book—just letting it unfold as it will.
